As Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins his two-day visit to Assam, the Congress party has raised concerns over corruption and law enforcement failures in the state.
At a press conference in Guwahati, Assam Congress leaders alleged that BJP-affiliated individuals had attacked police officers without facing any arrests. They also pointed out that Congress MP Rakibul Hussain and PCC president Bhupen Borah were attacked in broad daylight, yet no legal action was taken.
Congress general secretary in charge of Assam, Jitendra Singh, questioned, "Does Modi even know the level of corruption in Assam? Why is no action being taken?"
The Congress also criticized the BJP for rising unemployment, Assam’s struggling economy, and selective law enforcement against political opponents. The handling of illegal immigration by the ruling party was also questioned.
Modi is set to inaugurate the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit to attract investments. However, the Congress dismissed it as an attempt to replicate Gujarat’s "failed" model in Assam. They claimed that the first edition of the summit saw 200 MoUs worth ₹1 lakh crore, but only 51% were materialized, mostly by PSUs. Assam ranked 20th in the 2020 Ease of Doing Business index, raising further doubts about the effectiveness of BJP's economic policies in the state.
