The Indian National Congress has launched a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of large-scale corruption, misuse of power, and favoritism. During a press conference held on February 24, 2025, senior Congress leaders alleged that the BJP-led Assam government has failed to address critical issues such as unemployment, economic decline, and rising lawlessness.
Allegations of Corruption and Favoritism
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi labeled Sarma as “the most corrupt Chief Minister in the country,” claiming that under his leadership, the state's economy has suffered significantly. He accused Sarma of manipulating government mechanisms to shield BJP leaders while targeting political opponents.
One of the major allegations revolves around Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma. Congress leaders claimed she amassed enormous wealth within a short period, acquiring multiple tea estates, launching a news portal, securing a McDonald's franchise, and even running an international school. Furthermore, allegations were raised regarding her company, Pride East Entertainments Pvt. Ltd., receiving a ₹10 crore subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana.
BJP’s Governance Under Scrutiny
Congress leaders also questioned the BJP government’s economic track record in Assam. They highlighted the growing unemployment crisis and the state’s declining rank in business-friendly reforms. The party claimed that the so-called development projects under the BJP government had failed to materialize, leaving Assam’s youth and small businesses struggling.
Additionally, Congress criticized the BJP’s approach to law and order in the state, stating that police forces were being used to silence opposition voices rather than maintaining justice.
Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Response
In the past, Chief Minister Sarma has strongly refuted allegations of corruption, calling them politically motivated attacks. In a 2022 interview, he denied any financial misconduct, asserting that neither he nor his family had gained undue benefits from government contracts. As of now, he has not made an official statement regarding the latest allegations from Congress.
Congress to Intensify Its Campaign
With elections on the horizon, Congress has vowed to intensify its campaign against the BJP in Assam, promising to expose what they call the “deep-rooted corruption” in the current government. As political tensions rise, Assam remains a key battleground where both parties will continue to fight for public trust.
