Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced new rules for obtaining Aadhaar cards in the state to prevent illegal immigration. Starting October 1, only those who applied for the NRC in 2014 will be eligible for new Aadhaar cards. This measure is expected to help identify and remove unauthorized residents.
Exceptions to the rule include children, individuals whose biometrics were locked during the NRC process, and residents of tea garden areas.
The CM noted that several districts have reported more Aadhaar card holders than their projected populations, suggesting potential irregularities. The new rules aim to address these discrepancies and ensure that Aadhaar cards are issued only to eligible residents.
